Farm update 4:

The harvest season has begun! From December to February coffee cherries will be hand picked everyday. The harvesting is long and laborious. Everyday workers will come to the farm, pick only the ripe cherries 🍒 one by one by one. Ripe cherry means fully mature bean, bigger bean, better quality and a complete flavor profile. Hand picked coffee is always going to be better than machine harvested coffee. This is why specialty coffee from Chikmagalur is known for its quality.

Just like our family farm, Most coffee farms in India are family owned. They grow different varieties of coffee like S795, S274, S9, Cauvery are some of them.

The bags of coffee cherries will be sent to a processing facility where they will be de husked, washed and sun dried. A lot of this process is again manual and laborious.

We will keep posting the journey of your beans. All the way from farm to your cup.

We never say no to an espresso!

Hope you all are enjoying the holiday season. We woke up late, went for a run, came back had late lunch and completely forgot about coffee until late afternoon when I reminded Milana that she skipped her morning coffee.

Poured some medium roasted Le Mil’s Arabica beans in the grinder, pulled a double espresso on our baby breville and tried my best to make latte art! I am no barista so I’m feeling pretty good about how it turned out. What do you think?
Roasting day recap!

Our latest batch was roasted in 12/17/24 and this is what a typical roasting day looks like. Or should we call the pick up day?

Roasting team informed us on Tuesday that roasting was completed and bags are ready to pickup. We drove in on Thursday to pickup the bags. We shared a delicious pour over and a croissant. Milana took a few meetings, while I was catching up Tanya (@kavericoffee) and Phillip (@sunset_roasters)

Driving back home without getting stuck at the toll bridge is impossible but we made it back home. Made some local deliveries and called it a day.

See you at the @newarkfarmersmarket with the fresh batch :)

It was a fun a roasting day for Le Mil’s coffee. Our roasting days are turning into pickup days now. Thanks to the brilliant roasting team at @corocoffee, our roast profiles are now saved in the computer, which enables us to replicate the same roast consistently for every batch! Makes things much easier.

Because of the increased demand for Indian coffee, and still managing full time jobs, we decided to get help from the pro roastmasters at @corocoffee to roast our beans so we can focus fully on fulfilling the orders.

We picked up our coffee, met some friends, had some coffee, shipped some orders and finally went back home.

We met Tanya of @kavericoffee. Met Philip and Sara of @sunset_roasters as well. Always fun to meet fellow indie roasters! If you haven’t tried their coffee check them out too.

Remember, local coffee is always roasted with ❤️

Farm update 3:
What happened at the Coffee farm in the last two months?

We had an unexpected visit from a herd of wild elephants. see slide six for the trail of destruction they left behind.

More coffee plants now bearing fruit. take a look at the green Coffee cherries. Some of them already turning red.🍒

Weed was cleaned around the young coffee plants so they don’t have to fight for the nutrients.

Feeling sleepy now but we will be back with more updates next week!

The aftermath of the elephants visit.

Last week a heard of wild elephants passed through the farm 🐘🐘🐘and this was the aftermath. In southern India, most coffee estates are situated on the borders of the national parks which are sanctuaries for wildlife such as elephants. Out very common for them to pass through the coffee farms because these farms resemble their natural habitat. In India, coffee grows under the shade of large trees long mango, orange and jackfruits. Ample shade and and lots of fruits is very enticing to elephants and they often visit the coffee estates in search of a different lunch menu :)

They are peaceful but do leave a trail of broken branches and damage the younger coffee plants. You can see their footprints in the mud, maybe next time wr catch them in action:)

What an exhilarating experience it’s been as a first-time coffee vendor at the SF Coffee Festival! As a 5th generation coffee farmer from India, I’m thrilled to be introducing our rare and exceptional coffee to the discerning coffee lovers of the Bay Area.

The energy and enthusiasm of the festival-goers have been simply infectious. People are lining up at our booth, eager to try the unique flavor profile of our Indian coffee beans. With its rich, chocolatey notes and earthy, nutty undertones, our coffee has been a revelation to those more accustomed to the bright, fruity flavors of Central American and African beans.

The looks of delight and surprise on the faces of our customers as they savor their first sip have been incredibly rewarding. Many have remarked that they’ve never tasted anything quite like it, and are eager to learn more about the history and traditions of Indian coffee cultivation.

It’s been a true privilege to share our family’s passion and expertise with this vibrant community of coffee enthusiasts. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the festival has in store, and to continue spreading the word about the exceptional quality and unique character of Indian coffee.
