Le Mil's Coffee : FAQ

How did Le Mil's Coffee begin?

Le Mil's began with a family farm in Chikmagalur, India. When Milana's parents were considering selling the farm because it had become too difficult to manage, Milana and Himanshu decided to give it a chance. They spent a year working through permits, business registrations, importing, and roasting before bringing the coffee to life in San Francisco.

The first small batch was sold at a simple neighborhood pop-up. Five of the first ten bags sold, and that was the moment Le Mil's knew this could work. The business grew from small monthly roasts to a café, online coffee sales, wholesale partnerships, and a place dedicated to showing people how good Indian coffee can be.

Why is the name Le Mil's French?

The name Le Mil's was born on a trip to Napa Valley, long before coffee, roasting, or a café was on the horizon. Milana's friends call her Mils, and during a wine-filled weekend she and Himanshu started dreaming up a completely different business: a vineyard in France. They wanted a name that felt playful and a little French, so they added “Le” to Mils. It was a spontaneous idea, but they liked it enough to buy the domain name that night, just in case.

Years later, when the family coffee farm became the beginning of a new chapter, that unused domain suddenly had a purpose. The name carried a private story about the two of them and a leap taken together, even if it did not sound traditionally Indian. Today, Le Mil's is a reminder that the best ideas do not always arrive fully planned. Sometimes a name starts with a glass of wine, waits patiently for the right moment, and eventually finds its way to a coffee farm in India and a café in San Francisco.

What makes Le Mil's Coffee different?

Le Mil's brings coffee from a family farm in India and roasts it locally in San Francisco. That means the coffee is connected directly to the people who grow it, while the roasting profiles are developed here specifically for these Indian beans. The goal is simple: let people taste Indian coffee at its best, not rely on old assumptions about what Indian coffee is supposed to be.

Where does Le Mil's coffee come from?

The coffee comes from the Chikmagalur region of Karnataka, India, where the family farm is located. Chikmagalur is known for its high-altitude coffee-growing conditions, shade-grown farms, and long history of coffee cultivation.

Choosing Your Coffee

Which Le Mil's coffee should I try first?

Start with Malenad, the balanced medium roast. It works well as pour over, drip coffee, or espresso, so it is an easy introduction to Le Mil's and to Indian coffee. If you want to sample several profiles, try the Indian Coffee Introduction Box.

What is Budan?

Budan is the light roast, named after Baba Budan, the Sufi saint traditionally credited with bringing the first coffee seeds to India. It is a favorite for pour over and French press, with notes of dark chocolate, hazelnut, citrus, and a gently earthy, nutty character.

What is Malenad?

Malenad is the medium roast and the café's main espresso blend. It combines Indian Arabica and Robusta to create a balanced coffee with sweetness, body, and a rich crema in espresso drinks.

What is Chikka?

Chikka, short for Chikmagalur, is the dark roast. It is the strongest of the core coffees and includes Robusta, which naturally contains more caffeine than Arabica.

What is Bhadra?

Bhadra is 100% Indian Robusta. It was created for guests looking for something even stronger than Chikka. It is a high-caffeine coffee and is best for people who already know they handle caffeine well.

How should I brew Le Mil's coffee at home?

For pour over, try a 1:15 or 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio. A good starting point is 20–22 grams of coffee with about 300 milliliters of water, aiming to finish the brew in roughly 2:45 to 3 minutes. Use that as a starting point, then adjust it to your taste. Coffee is not rocket science, so brew it the way you enjoy it.

What does Le Mil's pour-over coffee taste like?

The light-roast pour over is designed to show the character of the beans: dark chocolate, hazelnut, citrus, and earthy, nutty notes with a gentle spice. Compared with many South American coffees, it is less focused on bright acidity and fruitiness and more focused on chocolate and warmth.

Parle-G is a small taste of home. It is a nostalgic childhood snack for many people who grew up in India, whether they enjoyed it with tea or coffee. It is a little reminder that makes the drink feel familiar, and you can eat it or skip it.
